Leaves left down do not just look bad. They kill turf.
A wet layer of oak and maple leaves sitting on grass blocks light and air. Under snow it mats into a seal, and by the time it thaws you have dead patches, not tired grass. That is the damage a fall cleanup is actually preventing.
Spring is the other half. Turf that spent the winter matted needs opening up before it will wake, and along the shoreline there is a winter of road sand and salt sitting in the edge of the lawn waiting to burn it.

Spring is about opening the property up. Fall is about closing it down clean. The work is genuinely different.
Spring cleanup

- Often two passes, because oaks hold their leaves weeks after the maples are done
- Walks, drive and patio blown completely clear
Three things that happen to a lawn left dirty over winter.
None of this is visible in November. All of it is visible in April, and by then the fix costs more than the cleanup would have. The disease names are the ones UConn tracks for New England turf.
Snow mold
Gray and pink snow mold develop under snow cover on grass that went into winter long or buried in leaf litter. Pink is the one that kills the crown rather than just the blade. A short final cut and a clean lawn are the whole prevention.
Smothered turf
Wet matted leaves seal the surface. The grass underneath cannot exchange gas or get light, so it thins and dies in patches shaped exactly like where the leaves drifted.
Voles
Leaf litter under snow is cover. Voles tunnel through it all winter and you find the runways in the turf when it melts. Clearing the litter takes the habitat away.
Timing is the whole job.
Spring timing
Once the ground is firm enough to walk and work without rutting it. That is usually April here, but it moves with the thaw. Going in too early on saturated soil compacts it, which costs the lawn more than waiting a fortnight.
Fall timing
After the bulk of the drop, which on most properties around here means late October into November. Oaks hold weeks longer than maples, so a property with mature oaks usually wants two passes rather than one early sweep that gets undone.
Booking ahead
Both fill. Fall especially compresses into a few weeks when everyone wants the same thing at once, so the properties on the schedule in September are the ones that get the date they want.

Can I book just one of them?
Yes. Plenty of people take the fall cleanup only, because that is the one with real consequences if it is skipped. Spring on its own is fine too.
Do you take the leaves away?
Yes. They leave with us. No bagged rows at the curb waiting on a pickup that may or may not come.
Why might my property need two fall passes?
Oaks drop weeks after maples. On a property with mature oaks, one sweep in late October gets completely undone by mid November, so two passes is cheaper than doing it once and doing it again.
What if the weather moves my date?
It will sometimes, and we tell you when it does. We do not work saturated ground in spring because it compacts the soil, and there is no point clearing leaves in the middle of a drop.
