Can Leaving Fallen Leaves on Your Lawn All Winter Kill Your Grass?

Yes, it can. Not every leaf on every lawn, but a thick, wet layer left on the grass from November to April can kill it in patches. You find out in spring, when the snow melts and there are flat, dead spots in the shape of every drift.

What happens under the leaves

Three things, and they stack up over a Connecticut winter.

1. The grass smothers

Wet leaves mat down and seal the surface. Grass is still alive in late fall and early spring, and it needs light and air. Under a leaf mat it gets neither, so it thins and dies back. The thicker the mat, the bigger the dead patch.

2. Snow mold moves in

Leaves trap moisture against the turf, and snow on top keeps it there. That is exactly what snow mold likes. The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station describes gray snow mold as a common winter disease on lawns that stay covered for long periods. It shows up as matted, straw-colored circles when the snow melts. Most mature lawns grow out of it, but it sets the lawn back weeks in spring.

3. Voles get a winter roof

Leaf litter under snow is cover. Voles tunnel through it all winter, out of sight of hawks and foxes, and feed on the grass as they go. When the snow melts you find their runways cut into the turf. Clearing the leaves takes that habitat away.

How many leaves is too many?

If you can see grass through the leaves, a few passes with a mulching mower will chop them small enough to break down, and that is fine. If the leaves cover the lawn completely, or they have drifted into piles against the house, the fence or the beds, they need to come off before the snow.

If it already happened

If you are reading this in March and the lawn has dead, matted patches:

  • Rake the matted areas lightly once the ground dries out. That lifts the dead grass and lets air back in.
  • Give it a few weeks. A lot of snow mold damage is cosmetic and the grass recovers.
  • Patches that stay bare into late spring will need seed. The best results come from seeding in late summer, so plan for aeration and overseeding in the fall.

Timing for New London County

The maples drop first, usually in October. The oaks hold on and drop well into November. That is why a single early cleanup often is not enough here: the lawn looks clean on Halloween and is covered again by Thanksgiving. The goal is every leaf off the turf before the first snow that sticks.

Quick answers

Will a few leaves hurt the lawn?

No. A light layer mowed into small pieces breaks down and feeds the soil. The damage comes from whole leaves matted into a solid cover.

Is snow mold permanent?

Usually not. Most established lawns recover from gray snow mold in spring. Bare patches that do not fill in need to be reseeded.

Want the leaves handled?

An American Ground and Snow Management fall cleanup takes every leaf off the turf, pulls the leaves out of the beds and out from under the shrubs, cuts back the perennials, and blows the walks, drive and patio clear. The leaves leave with us, so there are no bagged rows at the curb. Oak-heavy lots often get two passes, because oaks hold their leaves for weeks after the maples are done.
